Historic “Draw The Line” March in Ottawa-Gatineau Calls for Climate Action, Indigenous Rights, Migrant Justice, Workers’ Rights, and Peace Ahead of Federal Budget 

Ottawa-Gatineau, ON/QC — On Saturday, September 20, 2025, thousands are expected to take to the streets in Ottawa-Gatineau as part of a historic, multi-issue mobilization demanding climate action, Indigenous sovereignty, migrant justice, workers’ rights, and an end to militarism.

The Ottawa contingent will gather near the Prime Minister’s Office (Wellington & Elgin) at 11:00 AM (ET), while the Gatineau contingent will begin at Maison du Citoyen (25 Laurier St.) at 11:00 AM (ET). The two marches will converge and rally by the U.S. Embassy before the final rally at the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights on Elgin. Marchers will then join an After-March Community Gathering with information tables, refreshment and music along Lisgar Street (between Elgin & Cartier).

This march is part of a National Day of Action endorsed by 300+ organizations, with more than 65 actions across Canada on September 20. Globally, it is part of a week of over 500 mobilizations in 94 countries under the “Draw the Line” banner. Locally, 70+ organizations are coalition members, supporters, and endorsers of the Ottawa-Gatineau action — including groups focused on climate justice, migrant justice, Indigenous rights, labour, and anti-war organizing, particularly opposition to Canada’s role in supporting the genocide in Palestine. The coalition emphasizes that these struggles are deeply interconnected.

WHY NOW

The mobilization comes just days after Parliament resumed and ahead of Prime Minister Mark Carney’s anticipated fall austerity budget. While families struggle with rising costs of living and communities face worsening climate disasters, the federal government is:

“People across movements are uniting to say enough,” said Sara Washburn, one of the Ottawa-Gatineau March organizers with Fridays For Future Ottawa. “We refuse austerity, colonialism, climate destruction, and militarism — and we demand a future where people come before profit.”

La marche historique « Fixons les limites » à Ottawa-Gatineau : pour le climat, les droits des Autochtones, la justice pour les migrants, les droits des travailleurs et la paix avant le budget fédéral

Ottawa-Gatineau (ON/QC) — Samedi le 20 septembre 2025, des milliers de personnes sont attendues dans les rues d’Ottawa-Gatineau pour une mobilisation historique et multi-volets exigeant l’action climatique, la souveraineté autochtone, la justice pour les personnes migrantes, les droits des travailleurs et la fin du militarisme.

Le contingent d’Ottawa se rassemblera près du Bureau du premier ministre (Wellington & Elgin) à 11 h (HE), tandis que le contingent de Gatineau partira de la Maison du Citoyen (25, rue Laurier) à 11 h (HE). Les deux marches convergeront pour un rassemblement près de l’ambassade des États-Unis avant la clôture au Monument canadien pour les droits de la personne sur la rue Elgin. Les participants sont ensuite invités à un rassemblement communautaire festif avec kiosques d’information, rafraîchissements et musique sur la rue Lisgar (entre Elgin et Cartier).

Cette marche fait partie d’une Journée nationale d’action appuyée par plus de 300 organisations, avec plus de 65 mobilisations prévues partout au Canada le 20 septembre. À l’échelle mondiale, elle s’inscrit en une semaine de plus de 500 mobilisations dans 94 pays sous la bannière « Fixons les limites ». Alors que les familles peinent à couvrir le coût de la vie et que les communautés font face à l’aggravation des catastrophes climatiques, le gouvernement fédéral :

Ottawa-Gatineau Coalition Organizes “Draw the Line” March to Call For Social, Economic and Environmental Justice

When: Saturday September 20, 2025, at 11:00 -13:00, followed by free refreshments and music in the outdoor space near the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights monument.


A Draw The Line Mass Bike Ride is also planned for the evening before the march, meeting in Confederation Park September 19 at 18:00.

What: A diverse coalition of Ottawa-Gatineau based organizations will come together for the Draw the Line March to stand for justice across different causes, including climate action, Indigenous solidarity, labour, migrant rights, and anti-militarism. This is part of a national day of action against injustice, where tens of thousands will take part in over 50 similar protests happening across so-called Canada.

As the nation’s capital, Ottawa will serve as a flagship event for the broader Draw the Line day of action.

Where: The Ottawa contingent will meet at Wellington and Elgin (80 Wellington St) at 11:00 EST, while the Gatineau contingent will meet at Maison du Citoyen (25 Laurier St.) at 11:00 EST. The two contingents will eventually converge at a rally stop near the US Embassy on Sussex Street. The march will conclude at the Canadian Tribute to Human Rights near the corner of Elgin and Lisgar.

Who: The Ottawa–Gatineau Draw the Line March is being organized by a broad coalition of climate action groups, seniors’ movements, labour unions, student associations, faith groups, and more.  Together, we are standing in solidarity across causes to demand justice in every aspect of our lives.

Ottawa, Canada | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People — Hundreds of members of the Ottawa-Gatineau community will come together on Saturday, September 21 to expose six of the institutions and organizations that are responsible for causing climate change and impeding climate action. The demonstration answers Fridays for Future’s Global Call to Action to end fossil fuels, coinciding with the UN Summit of the Future on September 22-23, 2024. Marchers in Ottawa will join millions of people gathering in over 150 similar events being held around the world this month to demand a fast, fair, and funded phase-out of fossil fuels.

Climate change is a global crisis that impacts everyone, but that doesn’t mean we are all equally responsible for causing it, nor are we responsible for Canada’s lack of action. The Ottawa-Gatineau Climate March, organized by Fridays for Future Ottawa-Gatineau, shifts the narrative on climate change away from individuals and places the blame on the nation’s biggest polluters, as well as the organizations that should be leading the way toward a green transition.

“For too long, the oil and gas industry has blamed ordinary Canadians for causing climate change. We’ve been told to recycle, carpool, and reduce our carbon footprint – all while fossil fuel industry actors lie and rake in record profits. So now we’re taking aim at the root of the problem, the institutions and industries that produce the most emissions and drag their feet on meaningful action: Canada’s Climate Culprits!” said Hannah Tellier, a Core Team Member and Social Media Lead for Fridays For Future Ottawa-Gatineau, who will also serve as one of the MCs for the Climate March. “Our demands are simple. All levels of government and industry must stop funding, supporting, and enabling fossil fuels, and follow through with their climate commitments.”

Starting at Ottawa City Hall, participants will hear from Horizon Ottawa about the City’s delayed and patchy implementation of the Climate Change Master Plan. From there, marchers will travel to the downtown locations of five more Climate Culprits: the Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), the Canadian Gas Association (CGA), the Province of Ontario, the Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP) and Export Development Canada (EDC).

At each location, participants will learn about how these organizations are blocking effective climate policy, spreading misinformation, and providing funding to the disastrous fossil fuel industry – such as the $256 BILLION USD that RBC has spent on fossil fuel deals since 2016, and the $7.3 billion in fossil fuel subsidies provided by Export Development Canada in 2023.

“We have a responsibility to support Indigenous land defenders, who are protecting the land and water we all depend on, by speaking out against fossil fuel extraction projects and demanding that all levels of government and industry stop funding fossil fuels,” said Chantal Pelletier of Decolonial Solidarity Gatineau Ottawa.

Some stops will be at the industry associations that represent Canada’s biggest polluters: where speakers will expose the Canadian Gas Association (CGA) for lying to Canadians and spreading misinformation through their fake online persona, Voice for Energy, and call out the Canadian Association for Petroleum Producers (CAPP) for polluting the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the planet we need to survive.

Ottawa, Canada | Territoire traditionnel non cédé du peuple algonquin Anishinaabeg — Des centaines de membres de la communauté d’Ottawa-Gatineau se réuniront le samedi 21 septembre pour dénoncer six des institutions et des organisations qui sont responsables des changements climatiques et de l’entrave à l’action climatique. La manifestation répond à l’appel mondial à l’action de Fridays for Future pour mettre fin aux combustibles fossiles, qui coïncide avec le Sommet de l’avenir de l’ONU les 22 et 23 septembre 2024. Les manifestants à Ottawa se joindront à des millions de personnes qui se rassembleront dans plus de 150 événements similaires organisés dans le monde entier ce mois-ci pour exiger une élimination progressive, rapide, équitable et financée des combustibles fossiles.

Les changements climatiques sont une crise mondiale qui touche tout le monde, mais cela ne signifie pas que nous sommes tous également responsables de sa cause, ni de l’inaction du Canada. La Marche pour le climat d’Ottawa-Gatineau, organisée par Fridays for Future Ottawa-Gatineau, détourne le discours sur les changements climatiques des individus et rejette la faute sur les plus grands pollueurs du pays, ainsi que sur les organisations qui devraient ouvrir la voie à une transition verte.

« Pendant trop longtemps, l’industrie pétrolière et gazière a accusé les Canadiens ordinaires d’être à l’origine des changements climatiques. On nous a dit de recycler, de faire du covoiturage et de réduire notre empreinte carbone, alors que les acteurs de l’industrie des combustibles fossiles mentent et engrangent des bénéfices records. Alors maintenant, nous nous attaquons à la racine du problème, aux institutions et aux industries qui produisent le plus d’émissions et qui traînent les pieds pour prendre des mesures significatives : les coupables climatiques du Canada », a déclaré Hannah Tellier, membre de l’équipe principale et responsable des médias sociaux pour Fridays For Future Ottawa-Gatineau, qui sera également l’une des animatrices de la Marche pour le climat. « Nos exigences sont simples. Tous les ordres de gouvernement et l’industrie doivent cesser de financer, de soutenir et d’encourager les combustibles fossiles, et respecter leurs engagements climatiques.

À partir de l’hôtel de ville d’Ottawa, les participants entendront Horizon Ottawa parler de la mise en œuvre tardive et inégale du Plan directeur sur les changements climatiques par la Ville. De là, les marcheurs se rendront au centre-ville de cinq autres responsables du climat : la Banque Royale du Canada (RBC), l’Association canadienne du gaz (ACG), la province de l’Ontario, l’Association canadienne des producteurs pétroliers (ACPP) et Exportation et développement Canada (EDC).

À chaque endroit, les participants découvriront comment ces organisations bloquent l’adoption de politiques climatiques efficaces, diffusent de la désinformation et financent l’industrie désastreuse des combustibles fossiles, comme les 256 milliards de dollars américains que RBC a dépensés pour des ententes sur les combustibles fossiles depuis 2016 et les 7,3 milliards de dollars en subventions aux combustibles fossiles fournies par Exportation et développement Canada en 2023.

« Nous avons la responsabilité de soutenir les défenseurs des terres autochtones, qui protègent la terre et l’eau dont nous dépendons tous, en dénonçant les projets d’extraction de combustibles fossiles et en exigeant que tous les ordres de gouvernement et l’industrie cessent de financer les combustibles fossiles », a déclaré Chantal Pelletier de Decolonial Solidarity Gatineau Ottawa.

Certains arrêts seront dans les associations industrielles qui représentent les plus grands pollueurs du Canada : où des conférenciers dénonceront l’Association canadienne du gaz (ACG) pour avoir menti aux Canadiens et diffusé de la désinformation par le biais de leur fausse identité en ligne, Voice for Energy, et ont appelé l’Association canadienne des producteurs pétroliers (ACPP) pour avoir pollué l’air que nous respirons, l’eau que nous buvons,  et la planète dont nous avons besoin pour survivre.

Ottawa, Canada | Traditional, unceded territory of the Algonquin Anishinaabeg People —On  September 21, Fridays for Future Ottawa-Gatineau is marching to the downtown locations of CANADA’S CLIMATE CULPRITS! These are six organizations that are blocking effective climate policy, spreading misinformation, and providing funding to the disastrous fossil fuel industry.

For too long, the oil and gas industry has blamed ordinary Canadians for the causes and effects of climate change. We’ve been told to recycle, carpool, and reduce our carbon footprint–all while they lie and rake in record profits. Individual action certainly has its place, but it has become absolutely clear: preventing the worst of climate change will require systemic change.

It’s time to take aim at the root of the problem, the institutions and industries that produce the most emissions and try to prevent meaningful change: Canada’s Climate Culprits!

Our 2024 Canadian Climate Culprits are:
❌ The City of Ottawa
❌ The Royal Bank of Canada (RBC)
❌ Canadian Gas Association
❌ The Province of Ontario
❌ The Canadian Association of Petroleum Producers (CAPP)
❌ Export Development Canada (EDC)

These culprits invest in and enable the fossil fuel industry, drag their feet on meaningful change, and try to block a just transition to clean energy. They drive up the cost of living for ordinary people, cause wildfires across Canada, and worsen extreme weather right here in Ottawa-Gatineau. They put profit over people. Every. Single. Day.

Our family-friendly march begins at Ottawa City Hall (110 Laurier Ave W) at 11AM, and will conclude at Confederation Park (corner of Elgin and Laurier), where there will be free food, drinks, and music. Several local environmental groups will be present at Confederation Park with more information on how participants can continue the fight for decisive climate action.

Pendant trop longtemps, l’industrie pétrolière et gazière a blâmé les Canadiens ordinaires pour les causes et les effets du changement climatique. On nous a dit de recycler, de faire du covoiturage et de réduire notre empreinte carbone, pendant qu’ils mentent et engrangent des profits records. L’action individuelle a certainement sa place, mais il est devenu absolument clair : prévenir le pire des changements climatiques nécessitera un changement systémique.

Il est temps de s’attaquer à la racine du problème, les institutions et les industries qui produisent le plus d’émissions et tentent d’empêcher un changement significatif : les coupables du climat au Canada !

Nos coupables canadiens du climat en 2024 sont :

OTTAWA THOUSAND YOUNG AND OLD JOIN MILLIONS AROUND THE WORLD CALL FOR A FAST AND FAIR EXIT FROM FOSSIL FUELS: MORE THAN 650 ACTIONS IN 54 COUNTRIES

OTTAWA, Unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe Territory, September 16, 2023 – Over a thousand Ottawans of all ages, joined people on every continent over the September 15-17 weekend in marching, rallying and striking for an end to the era of fossil fuels devastating our climate and worsening inequality. Over 550 actions are planned in 54 countries, culminating in a march in New York City on September 17th, in support of the UN Secretary General António Guterres’s call for nations to make ambitious commitments to phase out fossil fuels at the upcoming Climate Ambition Summit [1].

The Ottawa rally on Parliament Hill was led by Fridays For Future Ottawa, bringing together numerous local groups. The program featured  local youth ages 7 to 13 posing questions directly to political leaders in attendance and a strong participation of Indigenous speakers and musicians. See full program here.

Fridays For Future Ottawa is asking the federal government to place a hard cap on emissions and to roll back fossil fuel subsidies and preferential treatment of fossil fuel companies. 

“We cannot lose hope and this is so important for the youth of today.  Together, we can drive meaningful change and hold those in power accountable for the planet we all share,” said Phillipa Macdonald, a youth organizer with Fridays For Future Ottawa.

More than 3800 organizations have endorsed the demands of the global marches, which are drawing millions of participants [2]. The Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels calls for nations to renew and enhance their commitments for a rapid, just, and equitable phaseout from fossil fuels in favor of sustainable renewables. 
The global movement for a safe and liveable climate is more diverse and united than ever before, underscoring the urgency of this historic moment and the havoc wrought by record-breaking heat, massive wildfires, deadly floods, and increased extreme weather events in 2023.

The scientific consensus holds that we cannot postpone a rapid and equitable transition to sustainable renewable energy sources and must end our dependence on fossil fuels. Any new fossil fuel extraction is incompatible with global commitments to limit warming to under 1.5°C and incompatible with a liveable future.

Ottawa – August 23 2023 – The global call for urgent climate action has never been louder, and this year’s Global Climate Strike in Ottawa, taking place on September 15th on Parliament Hill, is poised to make an undeniable impact. Organized by Fridays For Future Ottawa, passionate climate activists of all ages, and supported by a coalition of local organizations, the event aims to peacefully amplify the voices demanding real change in the fight against climate change.  The Climate Strike in Ottawa is one of the many hundreds planned in communities around the world; there will be millions of people rallying in response to a call for coordinated global mobilisation.

Demanding Political Leaders’ Presence at the 2023 Global Climate Strike:
This year, Fridays For Future Ottawa is extending an urgent invitation to federal and local leaders, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe, to join the Climate Strike on September 15th on Parliament Hill. We hope political leadership will attend on September 15th and answer questions on climate action prepared by Youth volunteers.

Demands for a Sustainable Future:

No New Fossil Fuels: We demand an immediate halt to the expansion of fossil fuel extraction and infrastructure. Fossil fuels are responsible for nearly 90% of all CO2 emissions, which is driving climate breakdown. The time for bold action to lower emissions and transition towards renewable energy sources is now.

Rapid, Just, and Equitable Phase Out: Transitioning away from fossil fuels must be swift, just, and equitable, ensuring the well-being of communities disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change and the transition.

Stop Greenwashing: Corporations must be held accountable for their environmental claims, not rewarded with tax credits for their lies. We demand an end to greenwashing.

Strengthen International Commitments and Cooperation: Our shared climate crisis requires strong international collaboration. We call upon world leaders to strengthen commitments and work together to address the urgency of climate change.

Hold Polluters Responsible: Those responsible for environmental degradation must be held accountable for the consequences of their actions. Polluters should bear the responsibility of mitigating their negative impact on our planet.

Ban Fossil Fuel Participation in Climate Decisions: Fossil fuel interests have no place in shaping climate policies. We demand a separation of these interests from climate decision-making processes. Fossil fuel interests have hampered climate policies for decades, even though they fully understood the impact of their companies’ activities.

The 2023 Global Climate Strike on September 15th promises to be a pivotal moment in the global climate movement. “Ottawa has declared a climate emergency, yet our government is not acting like we’re in one. Transitioning from fossil fuels needs to happen in a just and equitable manner, and it needs to happen now,” says Phillipa Macdonald, a Youth organizer with Fridays For Future Ottawa.  “We the people will not sit idle while our future grows increasingly bleak at the hands of profit focused fossil fuel companies. We invite individuals, communities, organizations, and leaders who share our concerns for the environment and our collective future to join us on Parliament Hill. Together, we can drive meaningful change and hold those in power accountable for the planet we all share.”

2023 GRÈVE CLIMATIQUE MONDIALE LE 15 SEPTEMBRE: EXIGENT UNE ACTION CLIMATIQUE URGENTE SUR LA COLLINE DU PARLEMENT

Ottawa – le 23 août 2023 – L’appel mondial à une action climatique urgente n’a jamais été aussi fort, et la grève mondiale pour le climat de cette année à Ottawa, qui aura lieu le 15 septembre sur la Colline du Parlement, est sur le point d’avoir un impact indéniable. Organisé par Fridays For Future Ottawa, des activistes passionnés du climat de tous âges, et soutenu par une coalition d’organisations locales, l’événement vise à amplifier pacifiquement les voix exigeant un vrai changement dans la lutte contre les changements climatiques. La grève climatique à Ottawa est l’une des nombreuses centaines prévues dans les communautés du monde entier; il y aura des millions de personnes qui se rassembleront en réponse à un appel à une mobilisation mondiale coordonnée.

Exiger la présence des dirigeants politiques à la grève mondiale pour le climat de 2023 :
Cette année, Fridays For Future Ottawa lance une invitation urgente aux dirigeants fédéraux et locaux, dont le premier ministre Justin Trudeau et le maire d’Ottawa Mark Sutcliffe, à se joindre à la grève climatique le 15 septembre sur la colline du Parlement. Nous espérons que les dirigeants politiques seront présents le 15 septembre et répondront aux questions sur l’action climatique préparées par les jeunes volontaires.

Exigences pour un avenir durable :

Pas de nouveaux combustibles fossiles:  Nous exigeons un arrêt immédiat de l’expansion de l’extraction et des infrastructures de combustibles fossiles.  Les combustibles fossiles sont responsable de près de 90% de toutes les émissions de gaz carbonique, il fuels are responsible for nearly 90% of all CO2 emissions, ce qui est à l’origine de la dégradation du climat. Le moment est venu d’agir audacieusement pour réduire les émissions et passer à des sources d’énergie renouvelables.

Une élimination rapide, juste et équitable:  L’abandon des combustibles fossiles doit être rapide, juste et équitable, garantissant le bien-être des communautés touchées de manière disproportionnée par les impacts du changement climatique et de la transition.

Mettre fin à l’écoblanchiment:  Les entreprises doivent être tenues responsables de leurs revendications environnementales, et non récompensées par des crédits d’impôt pour leurs mensonges. Nous exigeons la fin à l’écoblanchiment -du “greenwashing”.

Renforcer les engagements et la coopération internationale:  Notre crise climatique commune nécessite une forte collaboration internationale. Nous appelons les dirigeants mondiaux à renforcer leurs engagements et à travailler ensemble pour faire face à l’urgence du changement climatique.

Tenir les pollueurs responsables de leur impact: Les responsables de la dégradation de l’environnement doivent être tenus responsables des conséquences de leurs actes. Les pollueurs devraient assumer la responsabilité d’atténuer leur impact négatif sur notre planète.

Interdire la participation des énergies fossiles dans les décisions climatiques: Les intérêts des combustibles fossiles n’ont pas leur place dans l’élaboration des politiques climatiques. Nous exigeons une séparation de ces intérêts des processus décisionnels climatiques. Les intérêts des combustibles fossiles ont entravé les politiques climatiques pendant des décennies, même s’ils comprenaient parfaitement l’impact des activités de leurs entreprises.

La grève mondiale pour le climat de 2023, le 15 septembre, promet d’être un moment charnière dans le mouvement climatique mondial. « Ottawa a déclaré une urgence climatique, mais notre gouvernement n’agit pas comme si nous en étions une. La transition des combustibles fossiles doit se faire de manière juste et équitable, et cela doit se faire maintenant », a déclaré Phillipa Macdonald, une organisatrice jeunesse avec Fridays For Future Ottawa. “Nous, les gens, ne resterons pas les bras croisés alors que notre avenir devient de plus en plus sombre aux mains des entreprises de combustibles fossiles axées sur le profit. Nous invitons les individus, les communautés, les organisations et les dirigeants qui partagent nos préoccupations pour l’environnement et notre collectif à venir nous rejoindre sur la Colline du Parlement. Ensemble, nous pouvons apporter des changements significatifs et tenir les personnes au pouvoir responsables de la planète que nous partageons tous.”
